Hello Guys, Here are some of the birds shot in a forest known to almost all birders located in Malaysia near Kota Tinggi. Panti is well know for its surprising rich variety of lowland birds species, more than 300 or more species are documented (info from web ). Rufous Backed KingFisher Red-naped Trogon White Rumped Shama Although its surprising rich variety of birds documented 300+ but I only got 3 whole day. The smaller ones are too fast. Others require skill and knowledge to search. ;D

Aha, now I see the great improvement. Good catch. All these birds not so easy to shoot with short lense so Richard, you can forget about going to Panti with a 70-200. Min 300mm with 2X TC or 400 with 1.4X TC.
Birds there are small, far and fast. If they are near, they are too near.

Thank you Richard and Deswitch. hm..... Deswitch..... Maybe Richard is on the way of getting a 600mm or he wanted to shooting macro of the 34 segment leeches or the black and white mosquito. And no problem Richard, we will go Panti someday but i wish deswitch can join us as a tour guide/adviser. I am still very new there, birds in front of me I also cannot see (I mean IN FRONT!) .

I am getting too old and too lazy to have to do wasted shoot .. unlike Marcus .. he is enjoying re do all the shot that he he did not get when he did not have the 600mm So if I am going in to feed those pesky leeches .. I will make d**n sure it a worthwhile trip like bringing a fricking 600mm But before going in .. better practice first

Hello Chief, I always wanted to go Panti forest to shoot, but having equipment limitation I have no choice but to shoot locally. Even with the manual Nikon 600, I will face limitation of shooting in those environment its just not practical. Yah.. like Richard pointed out nobody include me likes to carry heavy gear walking from point to point under the hot sun feed by insects still have to drive back singapore stuck at checkpoint etc..... What matter is only the end result, and sad to say must have the correct equipment to do it. ;D Its also not easy to shoot with a 400mm with 1.4x. As you can see my Red Nap Trogon its near 100% crop and the kingfisher is so small and so shy that is impossible to shoot. Unless ................. miracles happen! And miracles does happen! he he he ;D

For real miracles to happen, you must make it happen and not wait for it to happen. Most important you must be there.. ;D
Tricks of the trade include spying on forums for hint of what are the star bird there. The birds are pretty seasonal. sometimes you get it sometimes you dont. Now is the end of the breading season and from next month onwards, the birds will be harder to spot. Peak season is between March to June.
The Most difficult part of birding is to identify the sound they makes. When you hear the calls, you have to know where this bird is likely to be, high up in the trees or on the ground.
Ideally, go on Saturdays early in the morning and come back via 2nd link if you cant go on weekdays. Currently the Malaysian Army are camping there so its hare to shoot birds. They may chase you out of the area or their live firing will scare all the birds away.
Usually I go in the morning leaving at 5am to avoid the jam at the checkpoint and to reach Panti by 7am.
Dont go with new gears. Do some training locally. Bird there will not stay put for you to shoot. They will fly when they see you so reflex must also be fast.

Because of you I will give up shooting birds. I had been to panti for more than 3 years and yet i had not seen the Red Naped Trogon and the Philantoma. You got them in only 2 trips.
BTW, you didnt get the Piculet? Took me 2 years to hunt for it too.

I am sure you guys have a list of rare birds in Panti just that these 2 doesn't get in the record. ;D Piculet.. not nice record shot only.

Ong Kiem Siang, a dimunitive lady of about 5 ft over use her 400mm and film even and shot hundreds of birds including those in the Panti forest so I don't see why others cannot, harder maybe, more disappointment maybe, less maybe, but definitely can.

By chances I came across her book title "A Passion for Birds" She is an extraordinary Birder/Photographer. She lead as a role model for many to follow. Sorry to say I am 5.6ft using a 600mm shot and film less den hundred of birds including Panti forest do not have the determination, resource and time to do what she was doing for the last 17 yrs. Can forget about publishing books too. But what I can do is causal birding and post up forum for people to see and comments.

If I dont have so many mouth to feed and a fat bank acount, I would love to camp in Panti for 1 year to shoot and publish a book on all the birds of Panti. Maybe also include a book on Macro and wildlife.
There are lots of beautiful butterflies there. also got leaches which arer hard to find in Sg ;D
Beside that I also have in my collection 2 foot prints. one of a huge wild boar. the foot print itself is bigger than my outstretched palm and yesterday I saw a baboon like creature dash across the road. foot print like a child's foot.
Anyone want to sponsor me? one year less than 100K ;D

Beautiful Marcus, so when are we going? Hello Chief, really want to go? It may not be fruitful. Almost all shots are taken in this setting. Shutter < 1/15, exposure +1, > f7.1, ISO 400 or more no less, MLU, images 40 to 50 % crop from 1344mm. And a little blood donation.

Marcus, since Chief wants to go, bring him lor. But make sure he gets his BKT 1st. At least that will make the trip worthwhile if he cant get any birds... hehe.
Later he keep asking where where are the birds,, how?
