Hi allietan, Sometimes I wonder ..if P&S can do such a wonderful job, why are jokers like me using DSLR.. but DSLR is a must if you wish to proceed further in this expansive photography hobby Back to C&C This is pretty well exposed, the only problem I have with this is that the boat is neither here or there. Check with Cecil about Rule of Third. But somehow in this case, I think it wouldn't work too. If you look at this picture, there are 2 silhouette contesting for attention. The boat and the landscape, with the sun ray reflecting on the water. I think it would have been better to eliminate the land on the right all together or if it was possible (which is not often) place the boat in the path of the Sun's ray reflecting of the water and zoom in more reducing the visible silhouette of the land. One other thing..if you are shooting Landscape.. it is best to do it Landscape and not portrait wise..unless there is something that is able to took the whole frame Portrait wise.. Example In your case..the sky, the boat and the right side land are all contesting for the viewers attention. Just remember..the cleaner the shot the better. so if you want to show off the sky and ray..make sure that there is no other subject in the scene to distract the viewer.. Example Tried to place the Reflected ray in Rule of Third, but the boat was in the way..which is why it is important to frame your picture for effect This one is pretty straight forward, Rule of Third must be employed Example Something when you post process your photo, you have to lose some of the scene. There are many here in this forum who is against post processing, this is a matter of personal preference. I suppose Cecil has not touch on Rule of Third yet..go pester him.. dun let him end the course without teaching this Hope you dun mind me altering and posting the picture..let me known if you do..I will remove itJust my 2 cents

Richard, you are not the only Joker who had invested so much and yet can beat a P&S.
Allietan, your 1st photo is nice. Personally I feel inclusion of the boat make the photo more balance. Everyone have our own preference so as long as your photo look nice to you, you had done a good job.
As for the rule of third, sometimes you have to break it but unfortunately, for you Glosy Starling shots, it dont work. What Richard did was better but if you could sharpen the outline of the siloute (dunno how to spell) den its better. The best way to learn is to hang out with the seniors but that may be costly if they start introducing the "Ls"
Keep it up.

wah why we waste money buying expensive cameras? Some more hand held, no need to buy stands lah. singlish, singlish. Ok seriously, there is no right nor wrong just preferences, for the first shot I would thing that the rule of thirds would be better broken by placing the boat in the path of the sun's rays, like so: This would then complement and not conflict, thus becoming a part of, and the picture is balance. (Assuming that you can walk to a position that would accomoddate this) the 2nd picture, yes like lowlights showed, a rule of thirds with the bird on the right (reason for the right being, the bird is facing left and hence one should leave more space on the side where ever the subject is facing.

Hi Lowlights, thanks for the suggestions. I don't mind the tweaking of the photos, that's the way to learn right? By showing what you mean. Hi Deswitch, glad you like the boat photo. Hi Cecil, I get what you mean, it does look much more balanced with the boat in the sun's rays. Actually, he did go through the Rule of Thirds, me just forgot.... must remember Rule of Thirds..... Yeah, gotta get myself a dslr...... soon... thanks for the comments!
