Allow me to share my thoughts: 1) If you are committed to learn, you will definitely find yourself improving by at least 10~30%. At least, now I am more comfortable with the P,A,S,M modes, aperture, shutter speed, metering, etc. This course will encourage you to "think-and-consider" before every shot. ;D 2) A trainer who do not mind to "OT". That is a big ++! Beginners usually need guidance, so, it is very important you have a committed trainer who can help you. 3) Great and friendly coursemates! 4) The course fee is not that expensive. For that price, you get 6hours(++..)*6lessons, what more can you ask for? It certainly is value-for-money. 5) Last but not the least, I think through this course, you might get to know Singapore better. There is a workshop for every class, so we have went to several places in Singapore which I probably would not consider to go, such as Changi Boardwalk and Little India.

what is great about the class are: 1. there are practical workshop every lessons for at least 2 hours. learn not just theory but practical.
2. reinforce lessons again and again, with practical practice.
3. different types of practical lessons
one thing for the student (including myself-current batch) - must learn to "milk cecil dry." (of course, he is willing to share everything he knows with us) ha ha

To me this class i learnt from the both the theory n practical. liked tempdan mentioned the lesson reinforce again n again just liked today lesson (3rd lesson), it still covers what was taught at the 1st. I am a slow learner infact very poor at theory thats why most of the time i confused myself very easily but Cecil is a patience teacher with good advises and also speaks of what he thinks. From there i learnt the 1/3 rule , the spot metering n also others today....hahahaha......"read your manual" hahahaha......
yes "milk" him dry dry....hehehehe........
all i can say nothing to lose in attending this class......
BTW Teachers' day ard the corner......hehehehe.....Happy Teachers day , Cecil !!!!

Hi Chief!!!
Again thanks for the unselfishly passing knowledge to us, finally after spending money and time for 2 classes with other group i found the course we went through with you really fits beginners like me, and serious amateur photographers who wants to bring their skills to next level. and one thing i'm sure what we've learned is more than what we payed for.
i agree with slaicheng "A trainer who do not mind to "OT". That is a big ++"
The course basically change my DSLR point and shoot to a real DSLR use, but of course like what you always tell to the group that photography is a continues learning. And another important thing is that the Vietnam trip helps a lot! and other trips that you and the group organized for us.
thanks for sharing this 2 things that nobody wants to share.... Metering and White balance! ;D
hope to continue learning with the group!
thanks kris

Let me add my 6 cents:
Having a trainer that is passionate in his craft is indeed a great plus. The knowledge he shares is awesome and the constant grinding of 'read your manual' and 'find middle grey' are the keyes to learning. That and the essential (and often OT- ing) practical sessions are really what is needed to learn to love photography

Not sure whether I qualify to comment. I took the lessons last year. Agree with all other alumni here that the most beneficial thing is to have practical shooting session after the theory lesson. Learnt most of the stuff on the field and it is easier to remember when you refer back to the photos. ;D And of cos the chance to start shooting macro with other forum members here.... Bug fever bug fever...

Everybody already knows Cecil, he is a good teacher so I do not want to repeat again that point. He is a famous person. You can read on this thread how the students comments about him. I never attend the photography workshop class before except few hours’ basic knowledge how to use my D80. My learning is from manual and read some photography books but I still feel lack of something. When I saw “Free Workshop and Outing on Basic Photography in CS”, I am curious about it: “what I can get from there”. So I register and attended the free workshop class come with Punggol outing. Which I got some pointer from Cecil, thanks Cecil and I am lucky, two of my photos chosen as Editor’s choice in Nikon Club Beta. You can refer to the link address to see my photos with title “Lonely” and “Chase the silhouette” www.nikonclub.com.sg/pages/gallery.asp?page=1 I like the way the course set up, theory and practical/outing where you can direct apply theory to reality so I join his paid course and I enjoy it. My advice for the person who want to joint his class, read the basic photography book to get common photography term where will help you to understand better when you are in class. So joint his class, Happy learning and have a fun.

I enjoyed and learned a lot from Mr. Chan's photography class. There is indeed so much to learn in photography, I feel like the more you learn things, the more you realize that there is a lot more things to discover.
Aside from histograms, middle grey, metering, proper exposure etc, I learned a lot about sharing and having a positive attitude to life and to other people. (Thanks for sharing Mr.Chan!) The classroom culture at Mr. Chan's class is also a very good one; I find that my classmates are quite nice and approachable.
I agree that this class is all about practical application and not just theory.. Learning continues even after the class with outings organized by the group. Mr. Chan is one teacher willing to share his love and passion for photography, which I think is what makes this class different and unique. : )

This class is more than Basic Photography. Cecil is willing to share his experience with students anytime. With his guidance, I am sure those who attended his course, are satisfy with their photo results. The value Cecil has input, is far more than the course fee, if you would like to equate them. A gentle reminder: Be prepare to read more, especially your manual (RTFM), better to be ready with your manual at all time! You get to know new friends too !

A few of students had good knowledge of DSLR camera shooting, the others knew enough, and all I could managed at first was to press the button and let AUTOMATIC mode does it magic. Cecil's sharing to tips, contant follow-up and encouragement helped me tremendously improving my photography shooting. Now, I have some confidence to take pictures without setted camera to Auto mode.
My thanks, therefore, go to Mr. Cecil Chan for his super long theory lessons and practical outings ( the best deal you can get). I came to know many interesting places and took many pictures ( the mosquito bites were so worth it)! Furthermore he even offered Richell and me a ride with him to and fro for the 6 lessons. I cannot begin to tell you what a sweet soul he is.
I enjoyed the lessons with the people in the class as well. They were very friendly . Keep in touch .

For me, Cecil's class was a good start into the long, long, long ardous journey of DSLR photography. He shared a lot with the class in these six weeks. Till today he still goes out with us for photoshoots and is always there to answer our questions (Mr Chan, why does my histogram look like that? Mr Chan, how do I get rid of this over-exposed part? Mr Chan, do you think this lens is worth buying? Mr Chan, Mr Chan, Mr Chan... ) My classmates are wonderful too. I wish I had more time with them. Mr Chan should hold an intermediate class, an advance class, and an advance-advance class! To sum up, it's a great experience! If you're new to DSLR photography, take the class. Your new camera will love you for it (this is Tip 89 of 100 Tips on How to Make Your Camera Love You)! Denyce

Hi all,
Nice knowing you guys from the class. Well as for me I do get more from my camera when I first got it. From the guidance from the class, I am able to take reasonable picture as I am able to utilise some of the skill taught. As for the rest, haha need more time to practice.
thanxs cecil for the class.

Thanks guys and gals for your comments. As you know as long as you're members here the lesson doesn't end and later when you become proficient, you'll become the seniors and help other beginners like we're doing now.

Thank you Ivey for recommending Cecil's class which I started on Oct 4. You even sat through all the lessons one more time just to be with us (Awyong, Debi & Alice). Cecil's passion for photography shows in his style of teaching which is unique and needed getting used to initially. Cecil's punch line "read your manual!", know your camera and your stops.
What I appreciate most are the practical sessions after covering the theoretical lesson on basic photography. These practical outings help to reinforce my basic knowledge. Thanks Cecil for making learning fun taking breaks for "advertisements" on your products. You know what I mean.
Have a safe trip to Hanoi and look forward to seeing some fantastic photos.

Initially, I was putting off joining since everytime I planned to join, something or the other would come about. having said that, I am glad that I did take the plunge. i have learnt to appreciate the effort and also the understanding of the subject that goes into getting a good exposure.
his passion for the subject really pushes one to go that extra mile to understand and absorb the knowledge that he is imparting, and get the wow factor that one always looks for in any photograph.
i would definitely recommend his classes both for beginners and also for those who have been shooting for a while to help them understand the finer points of this subject.

Cecil has a lot of photography knowledge to share with his students. Looking for sun lights when shooting a picture ( a statement which Cecil repeats many times in the class) always on my mind when I shoot , as a result, my photos turn out nicer and receive a lot of compliments from others

I've learnt loads from Cecil's classes. He makes sure you learn something every lesson and will take the time to explain concepts you may find hard to understand. The photo outings are fun and he will always point out interesting things you might miss out on as an amateur photographer. I recommend his lessons to anyone who is serious about learning photography or is simply just looking to take better pictures.
Look for the light!

Thank you for the complements my students. I am a tough teacher as my objective is to help those under my tutelage not for monetary reason. In this aspect I believe I have failed more than succeed as honestly most students failed to grasp and learn more in my opinion.A good point would be "why are the students not asking questions regarding photography?" If I were learning I will be asking tens of questions and I know the trainer would be pretty perturbed with me.
